Ireland
Ireland is located in Northern Europe. Ireland is an island to the west of Great Britain separated from Great Britain by Saint George's Channel and the Irish Sea. This island consists of two parts: the nation of Ireland which covers about four-fifths of the island, and the northeast corner of the island called Northern Ireland which is an administrative division of the United Kingdom. Ireland covers an area of 70,273 sq km (27,133 sq mi) with a population of approximately 3.6 million. The capital of Ireland is Dublin. Ireland gained its independence from the British Empire in 1921.
Ireland is one of few European countries which still has a rug-weaving industry. In 1858, a rug-weaving workshop was opened in the village of Killybegs in Donegal. The rugs woven there came to be known as Donegal rugs. Ireland still produces these famous Donegal rugs. As a matter of fact, contemporary rugs are still being made in this same workshop.

The rugs made today are generally custom-made and can be made in different sizes. Their designs mirror twentieth-century abstract art. Even though they are not finely knotted, they are well made with very high quality wool. |
