Rug weaving in these three countries can go back in time as far as the sixteenth century during the reign of Ottoman Empire. Rug production for export began in Romania around 1950 and increased in 1975 when the US tariffs were decreased. Today, rugs woven in Romania are of Persian, Turkish, and Caucasian styles. A large number of Romanian kelims are also imported into the US. Bulgarian rugs are influenced mainly by Persian designs, and today Bulgaria has a minor rug-producing industry. Albania's designs are also based on Persian styles. Albania has been producing quality rugs since World War II. |
